Name of Patient: AMANKWA PASTOR  Condition: LIPOMA pastor272 years old Pastor Amankwaa has a lipoma on his forehead which started nine (9) years ago as a small swelling. He is a pastor by profession and feels shy whenever he had to stand at the pulpit or in front of people to deliver a message. He went to the hospital for surgery but the cost involved was expensive so he could not afford it. He came for GRAFT Foundation’s screening and was selected to benefit for surgery. Now he has fully recovered from surgery and confidently goes about his everyday duties as a pastor.

Name of Patient: AMANKWAH TWUMASI SAMUEL    Condition: HYPOSPADIA amankwah2 Samuel was born with a condition called Hypospadia which causes urine to pass under the shaft of his penis instead of the tip of the penis. He wets himself anytime he does not squat when urinating and also excess of the urine wets his dress because not all the urine is able to come out when urinating. This condition made it really difficult for him to be in school or any social gathering. Help was sought from different hospitals but to no avail because his guardian couldn’t pay for the cost until they crossed path with GRAFT Foundation. Samuel, 9 years old is now in school after the anomaly was corrected. It is a benign tumour growing from the fibrous coverings of a nerve peripheral nerve. It started as a small swelling on the right cheek as a kid and as he grew older, it spread to other parts of his body. One swelling has increased so large that it has deformed his face. People stare at him anytime to goes out making him uncomfortable. Because of financial difficulty he did not seek medical help. He came to GRAFT Foundation with a desperate need for help. He was chosen to undergo surgery and after a successful surgery, he’s fit and ready to face the world to make a decent living for himself and his family. It is a split on the upper lip. This anomaly when not repaired results in speech impaired problems and stigmatization is very high. Most mothers who give birth to babies with this condition dispose of the babies because they believe they are taboo babies. Feeding was a problem for little George but his mother persevered to take care of her baby. The mother had to hide him from public eye because of the stigma attached to it. GRAFT Foundation met little George during Ashanti Project and he was chosen for surgery. George has successfully undergone surgery where the lip and nose has been beautifully repaired. His mother can now take him along wherever she goes and George also has a chance to live a ridicule free life. It is an anomaly where there is partial or no opening of the vagina. Her mum did not realize it when she gave birth to her as she taught it was normal as a baby. She heard of GRAFT Foundation and approached us for help during one of our screening programmes. Surgery has been performed on Serwaa and she now have a normal vagina opening like any other girl child. It is a disease of tissue destruction of the face, especially the mouth and cheek. Jamilatu had buruli ulcer when she was a child, after treatment, it developed into a Noma. As a result she had a sore on her cheek which never healed. She was easily prone to diseases as the sore served as a gateway for the diseases. She came to GRAFT Foundation for help and after surgery, the sore on her cheek is healed with no discharges whatsoever. One evening they lighted fire and sat around it to keep them warm. Samir and his friends were playing near the fire when one his friends accidently pushed him into the fire. He was rushed to the hospital for treatment. When the burns healed it developed into a contracture as a result of improper care. This has rendered him incapable of stretching his right arm. His parents could not afford the cost of surgery so he was left to his fate until his parents heard of GRAFT Foundation and called on us for help during projects. Samir had a successful surgery and has had his contracture released. Due to his condition he had to wear shoes always to prevent people from seeing his sixth toe. His friends both home and at school who knew of his condition made fun of him. He was seen several times wanting to cut his sixth toe with a knife which could have resulted in him bleeding to death. This resulted in him being indoors always for fear of being teased. His parents heard of GRAFT Foundation Hope projects and took part in our screening exercise. His sixth toe has been surgically removed and has recovered fully from surgery. He now wears any type of foot wear and can be seen happily playing with his friends without fear of being mocked. After delivery the mother was afraid because she had never seen anyone with a cleft lip. During breastfeeding she noticed that her son had difficulty in sucking the breastmilk and as such she had to feed him with the feeding bottle. Godwin, 6 months is very malnourished because he can eat well. With proper counselling from GRAFT Foundation, Godwin was put on a special diet plan after which he’s had a life changing surgery on his lip and can now smile into his future. Her right foot and toes is bigger than the left foot and toes. This resulted in her buying two different sizes of the same shoes before she can get a pair of shoe for herself. She has to put on only flat shoes as heels causes great discomfort to her. Her dream was to be a model has been crushed because of her anomaly. After a successful surgery, Lauren has had her leg size reduced to make it comfortable for her to wear shoes of the same size. And his responds to this feeling is the only way he knows; with crying and shrieks. At the age of 3months, his mother took him to several hospital but there was no hope for little Kwame because they could not afford to pay for his surgery. Believing his condition was caused by demons and evil spirits; the neighbors rejected Kwame and advised his mother to dispose of him. She went to pastors, fetish priest, prayer camps and several places but there was no improvement. Then his mother heard of the Graft Foundation, Kwame could have a free plastic surgery and have a chance at living. Hope was finally found, he has successfully undergone and recovered from surgery and now smile into the future.
